המאמר עוסק בדילמה הקלאסית של ברנרד וויליאמס (Bernard Williams): ג‘ורג‘ הכימאי. בעוד שהדילמה של ויליאמס היא תיאורטית, ניתן לשים אותה בהקשר אמיתי, שבו מהנדסים מחויבים לקודים אתיים ולממדים של אסונות ישנם הגדרות של ארגונים בינלאומיים כמו ארגון הבריאות העולמי והצלב האדום. ניתן לדון בדילמה גם בתור דוגמה לחבלה ולהתייחס לקוד אתי בתור דוגמה לטקסט הצהרתי המזמין צביעות ומרמה שיכולים, אומנם, למנוע אסון. החלק העצוב הוא שהתת-פרק ההיסטורי שמדבר על חשיבות העיסוק במניעת אסונות (כמו בעקבות רעידת האדמה בליסבון בשנת 1755) להבניית החשיבה של תקופת ההשכלה, הורד מהמאמר בשל דרישות המערכת.
