the Second World War and the Holocaust
12-13 March 2024, Western Galilee College, Akko, Israel
Abstract submission deadline: 14 November 2023
Notification of acceptance by 14 December 2023
The Holocaust Studies program of Western Galilee Akko is honored to invite scholars of WW2 and the Holocaust to participate an academic conference dedicated to the memory of late historian Sir Martin Gilbert.
For many years, historical accounts of the Second World War and the Holocaust evolved independently, with these two subjects being treated as distinct academic fields. However, in recent years, there has been a growing recognition and willingness to perceive these two significant events as interconnected, not only chronologically but also in terms of ideology and practice. By examining the two as interconnected histories, we can gain a deeper understanding of both events and their complex relationship.
Sir Martin Gilbert, leading historian on the Twentieth Century and the official biographer of Winston Churchill, in his prolific and exhaustive work paved the way for future historians to combine research WW2 and the Holocaust. His work is an inspiration to generations of historians around the globe.
We invite scholars, from all academic fields, at all stages of their careers to submit proposals dealing with various aspects of the Second World War and the Holocaust.
Suggested topics include:
– The connection between the war and “The Final Solution.”
– Military history, battles and campaigns of WW2, logistics and resistance.
– Diplomacy and politics before and during the war.
– Winston Churchill’s leadership. Decision-making during the war by him and his – contemporaries.
– Jewish reactions to the final solution
– Allied leadership and its (mis)understanding of the anti-Jewish policies of the Third Reich
